ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Aboriginal Health Governance, Shared Decision Making and Accountability Principles

Principles

The principles of the framework are:

Principle 1

Aboriginal people are embedded into decision- making processes and governance structures that impact Aboriginal people in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health.

Principle 2

Aboriginal ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health staff are recognised in the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system and are supported and empowered to participate in shared decision making, governance and structures.

Principle 3

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health and the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector have strong partnership mechanisms.

Principle 4

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system is held accountable for Aboriginal Health outcomes.

These principles have been developed to:

  • embed the key concepts of shared decision making, self-determination and accountability in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health
  • support the implementation of the Priority Reforms Areas from CTG
  • be applicable across each ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health level of decision making and governance
  • strengthen partnerships between ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health and ACCOs.

Decision making and governance

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health levels of decision making and governance are:

Patient, carer, family and community

Clinical and operational decisions that have a direct impact on patient care.

Program, ward and service management

Clinical and operational decisions on how programs and wards are designed, managed and structured.

Hospital and health facility

Decisions and governance structures that manage ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health facilities.

Local Health District/Specialty Health Network management

Decisions and governance structures that manage LHD/SHN organisations.

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system management

Decisions and governance structures that manage ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health systems, including Ministry, pillars, shared and statewide services.

The principles are applicable at each of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health levels of decision making and governance. These levels were developed:

  • following consultations with stakeholders on the need of the framework to be applicable across the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system
  • to reflect the different decisions that have been identified across the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system
  • to capture the different contexts and environments within the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Health system.
