Construction is officially underway on the $138 million Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment, marking a significant milestone in delivering enhanced health services for Cessnock and surrounding communities.
窪蹋勛圖厙 Minister for Health Ryan Park joined local Aboriginal Elders, other local representatives, health staff and community members for a ceremonial sod turn event to mark the start of works on the transformative project.
The redevelopment will deliver a new, contemporary, two-storey Acute Services Building, which has been designed to enhance and modernise health services for the region.
The new health facility will house upgraded clinical services currently delivered in the existing hospital buildings, including:
Several decommissioned buildings on the hospital campus will be demolished to make way for the new development and improve access and connectivity across the site.
Construction follows the recent approval of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) planning application and the appointment of builder, Hansen Yuncken.
Cessnock Hospital will remain fully operational throughout the construction period, with minimal disruption expected for staff, patients and visitors.
The Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment will support an estimated 250 direct jobs, with the potential to support hundreds of indirect jobs over the life of the project.
The new hospital building is expected to be completed in 2027.
